In a candid conversation with Drew Barrymore, Sterling K Brown opened up about his journey as a Black actor and his aspirations to achieve an EGOT status – winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. The accomplished star, known for his roles in “American Fiction” and “This Is Us,” expressed his genuine surprise at earning an Oscar nomination for his recent performance, bringing him closer to his EGOT dream.
Reflecting on his three Primetime Emmy wins, Brown shared his realization that he was a quarter of the way to achieving EGOT status. He acknowledged the marathon-like nature of his career, emphasizing his commitment to the long haul. Despite not expecting his current role to lead to an Oscar nomination, he expressed his pleasure in being recognized for his work in the acclaimed satire.
Directed by Cord Jefferson and adapted from Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure,” the film explores the complexities of Black identity and representation in literature and film. Brown discussed the film’s satirical take on the narrow portrayal of Black stories and the expectations placed on Black characters by white liberal audiences.

During his appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Brown also shared a lighter moment, discussing his favorite on-screen death, reminiscing about his role as a vampire hunter on “Supernatural.”
As the anticipation builds for the 2024 Academy Awards, where “American Fiction” is nominated for five Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Brown, he remains grateful for the opportunity to contribute to expanding the portrayal of Black life on screen.
